Choosing Between Drone Cleaning and Traditional Access Methods

Los Angeles property managers evaluating exterior cleaning have four realistic options: drone cleaning, rope access, boom/scissor lifts, or scaffolding. Each has a place, but they are not interchangeable, and the right choice depends on the building’s height, facade, and access constraints as much as on price. Rope access and scaffolding both put technicians at height, which is why they’re governed by strict federal safety standards. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration maintains fall-protection requirements for work performed above six feet (OSHA Fall Protection standards), and rope access technicians typically need IRATA or SPRAT certification on top of that. Drone cleaning removes the worker-at-height element from the job entirely — the aircraft does the work while the operator stays on the ground. Commercial drone operators in the US are required to hold an FAA Part 107 remote pilot certificate (FAA Part 107 commercial operator requirements), which governs airspace, weather minimums, and operational limits.

Speed

Scaffolding setup alone can take days before any cleaning starts, and a full high-rise project can run several weeks. Rope access is faster to deploy than scaffolding but still requires rigging time per drop and is limited by how many technicians can safely work the building’s face at once. Drones can cover large glass and facade areas quickly once airspace and flight planning are cleared, which is why drone projects on mid- and high-rise buildings typically finish in a fraction of the time a scaffolding job would take.

Disruption to Tenants and Pedestrians

Scaffolding and lifts both usually require sidewalk closures or lane restrictions in dense areas like Downtown LA, Century City, and Beverly Hills, which means permits, additional insurance, and weeks of visible disruption to tenants and foot traffic. Rope access has a smaller ground footprint but still needs anchor access from the roof and sometimes partial sidewalk protection below the drop zone. Drone cleaning generally has the smallest ground-level footprint of the four, since there’s no equipment staged on the sidewalk and no fixed rigging points required.

Cost

Cost scales differently across methods. Scaffolding rental and labor scale heavily with building height and project duration. Rope access has lower equipment costs than scaffolding but is priced per technician-day, so it scales with facade complexity and crew size. Lift rental is priced daily and is constrained by how many stories a given lift can reach. Drone cleaning’s cost structure is driven more by facade area and flight time than by height alone, which is a meaningful advantage on taller buildings. Where Traditional Methods Still Make Sense

Drones aren’t the right tool for every job. Buildings with extremely intricate ornamental stonework requiring hand detailing, interior atrium glass that’s inaccessible from outside, or structures in restricted airspace near LAX and other controlled zones may still need rope access or lifts for part of the scope. A qualified vendor should tell you honestly when that’s the case rather than forcing a drone solution where it doesn’t fit.
